One of the accused in the murder of Amravati-based chemist Umesh Kolhe has sought discharge from the case that invoked Unlawful (Activities) Prevention Act (UAPA), stating there is no evidence to show that the accused were members of organisation Tablighi Jamaat or that it is a banned group. Abdul Taufeeque Shaikh, through his lawyer Adil Khatri, submitted to the court that the evidence does not show the involvement of the accused under any terrorist act to warrant invoking the UAPA. Kolhe was murdered on June 21, 2022, by three assailants when he was returning from work, days after he put up a post on WhatsApp in support of Sharma, who had allegedly made some controversial comments. Eleven persons were arrested in the case.
