Nearly five months after the Maharashtra government gave approval for four new railway police stations, two such police stations — Lokmanya Tilak Terminus and Asangaon — were inaugurated on Friday in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR).

Two other railway police stations, in Ambernath and Bhayandar, also approved by the government, will be constructed soon. Besides, two other railway police stations — Dadar and Panvel — have been relocated and renovated.

An official said a proposal was sent to increase the number of railway police stations on the suburban network because of the growing number of commuters.

On Friday, Additional Director General, Government Railway Police (GRP), Prashant Burde along with GRP Commissioner M K Kalasagar inaugurated the two new police stations and the renovated premises virtually.

The two new railway police stations takes the total number of railway police stations to 19 from 17.

The official said LTT, a key railway station that handles several long-distance trains daily, needed a dedicated GRP presence for a long time. “Given the crowds that gather and several instances of cheating and robbery here, a police station here was the need of the hour,” the official said.

According to the official, on the Central Railway (CR) line, the GRP had its police station at Kasara railway station after Kalyan — the distance between them is 67-70 km — covering 12 stations. “With the Asangaon police station being operational it will reduce the gap and help ensure law and order,” the official said.

Regarding Dadar and Panvel police stations, the official said Dadar railway police station was relocated from the crowded platform to an office above the station manager’s premises while Panvel railway police station was moved to a new facility.

The official added that work on the Bhayandar and Ambernath railway police stations is in progress and will be inaugurated soon. Towards the Pune line, the next railway police station after Kalyan is in Karjat, which is 46 km away, hence a need was felt for Ambernath police station.

On the Western line, the next police station after Borivali railway station is at Vasai, hence the Bhayandar station was approved, the official added.
