Mumbai Crime Branch has arrested a 23-year-old youth Friday for allegedly stealing over 2,600 kg of tomatoes from suburban Santacruz.

The accused, identified as Ranjen Jaiswal, a resident of Sion Koliwada, has been arrested by the sleuths of unit IV of crime branch.

“The complainant in the case told the police that he had brought the tomatoes in his tempo and parked the vehicle in Shastrinagar in Santacruz without unloading it yesterday.

However, later when he checked the goods, he realised that around 2,600 kg tomatoes have been stolen,” a police officer said.

Based on a tip-off, the police picked up the accused from Antop Hill in Sion Koliwada area within four hours of the alleged crime.

Police also recovered 1,988 kg of tomatoes from the accused, who has been handed over to Santacruz police for further probe.

Jaiswal has been booked under section 379 (theft) of IPC.
