The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has earmarked Rs 84 crore that will be utilised by 24 civic ward offices to repair potholes and patches on the roads in Mumbai ahead of monsoon.

The fund is being distributed to each and every civic ward based on the area of square meter of the total stretch of roads that passes through each ward.

The civic body uses bitumen and asphalt for repairing the patches and the cost of repair is around Rs 4,000 for every square metre. The highest allotment of Rs 6.5 crore has been made to K/West ward–covering Andheri West, Juhu and Versova areas–which has 16,250 square metre of road.

The R/South (Kandivali), R/Central (Borivali) and R/North (Dahisar) wards received Rs 5 crore each, since each of them have a road network spanning 12,500 square metre. The P/South (Goregaon) and P/North (Malad) wards have 10,625 square metre of roads and have been allotted Rs 4.25 crore each.

The lowest allotment of Rs 2.75 crore has been made to the H/East (Bandra east, Santacruze east), K/East (Andheri east) N (Ghatkopar) and S (Kanjurmarg) wards, which has 6,875 square meters of roads in their jurisdiction.

P Velrasu, additional municipal commissioner (projects), said the repair works will be completed next one month as the current tender for pre-monsoon road works is valid till June 15 only.

“All the ward officers are to identify the bad patches and ask the executive engineers of the road department to get the repairs done by the appointed contractual agency. The money allocated to the wards is higher than what the ward offices demanded. If additional funds are required, then approval would have to be taken through a proper channel,” Velrasu told Express on Monday.
