AFTER NEARLY a 10-month chase, the Mumbai Police has finally arrested the developer of a 15-storey building in Tilak Nagar that had caught fire, resulting in the death of five people last December.
The building, built by three developers, allegedly did not have an Occupational Certificate. The police had also found violations in the building structure, as a result of which the residents could not be rescued during the fire.
While one of the developers, Mukesh Kothari, was arrested in January, two others — Subhak Mapara and Hemendra Mapara — had been absconding. Subhak Mapara was arrested on Wednesday.
Senior Inspector of Tilak Nagar police station, S Kamble, said, “The duo kept changing location, due to which we could not arrest them. Our team received information that Subhak was at his brother’s residence at Valsad in Gujarat. A team arrested him from there.”
“We are still on the lookout for Hemendra, who is Subhak’s relative,” he added.
A short circuit in a decoration put up at a flat on the 11th floor of the building had led to the fire, which spread across the top floors.
Soon after the incident, the builders were booked on charges including culpable homicide not amounting to murder and endangering personal safety of others. The police have also filed a chargesheet against Kothari.
