Hundreds of backward class students along with activists of Nationalist Congress Students Council (NCSC) barged into the social welfare and justice department at Chembur Tuesday afternoon to protest against irregularities in disbursal of scholarships.
NCSC activists have threatened to intensify their protest if the scholarship payment is not disbursed on time henceforth.
While officials of the department claim the delay is due to technical glitches in making the accounts for payments, students have demanded an investigation.
We discussed the matter with the officials, but as no concrete action was taken,we organised this protest, said Amol Matele,NCSC.
The scholarship is meant for bright students from backward communities studying in under graduate and post graduate courses.
Matele added, We will wait for a month or two and if they still fail to disburse the amount,we will intensify our protest. We have written a letter to social welfare minister Shivajirao Moghe informing him about the matter.
Officials of the social welfare and justice department said they are short staffed and over worked. We can understand the plight of the students, but verification, processing of forms and opening accounts takes time. There was some technical glitches while opening the accounts, which will be resolved soon. We are short staffed,so the process is taking more time than usual, said Anil Sonawane, deputy commissioner of the department.
