PARSHURAM Nalawade (26),who fired at Rajaram Manjhaokar (62) two days ago,had tipped off Yusuf Bachkana,an aide of underworld gangster Chhota Rajan, after the Borivali builder refused help to his father, said Kasturba Marg police.
Nalawade is a resident of a chawl being developed under SRA by Manjhaokar.
Since Nalawade was lodged in jail, his father used to seek help from Manjhaokar.
After giving money on a number of occasions,Manjhaokar got fed up and refused help a month ago, said Sunil Deshmukh, assistant commissioner of police (Borivali division). This prompted Nalawade to tip off Bachkana. He told the Chhota Rajan lieutenant they could extort a huge amount from the builder.
Bachkana soon called Manjhaokar and demanded Rs 3 lakh.Tuesday, police arrested Nalawade for shooting at Manjhaokar while he was on his way to his office at Devipada in Borivali (East) in a Skoda.
Police said Nalawade met Bachkana in jail when he was serving life imprisonment in a murder case.
A month ago,he got out on parole but did not go back. He instead started to work for Bachkana and extorted money from builders.
On May 20,when Bachkana did not receive reply from Manjhaokar,he ordered his shooters in the area to scare him.
Police are trying to probe Bachkana, who is lodged in a Karnataka jail.
