Mumbai is gearing up for the annual Mahaparinirvan Diwas on December 6, as thousands of devotees prepare to pay homage to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Chaityabhoomi in Dadar. To ensure smooth transportation and crowd management, extensive arrangements have been made across the city’s rail and bus networks, with Central and Western Railway and the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) setting up special measures for the occasion.
Dadar, a major transit hub for devotees is bracing for a surge in footfall, with the daily passenger count expected to increase from 75-80 lakh to nearly 90-95 lakh. To manage this surge, railway authorities have announced route diversions and access restrictions effective from midnight on December 5 to midnight on December 6.
Key pedestrian routes like the Central Large Bridge connecting Central and Western Railway platforms will remain open only for platform transfers, while the skywalk bridge will cater to passengers entering or exiting the station from the east or west.
The railways are also running 16 special mail and express trains from December 4 to December 8, connecting key locations such as Nagpur, Amravati, Kalaburagi, and Adilabad to Mumbai. Twelve additional suburban train services will operate at midnight on December 5 and 6, covering routes like Parel-Kurla-Thane and Kurla-Vashi-Panvel. Special ticket counters and help desks have been set up at major stations, including Dadar, CSMT, and Kalyan.
A robust crowd management system has been allocated, with 675 ticket-checking staff and additional RPF and GRP personnel deployed at selected stations. Barricades and holding areas have been established at Dadar and CSMT to streamline passenger movement. Regular announcements and directional banners have been arranged to guide devotees, while facilities like drinking water, clean toilets, wheelchairs, and emergency medical services are being provided. Temporary platform tickets will be issued selectively at major stations to avoid overcrowding.
BEST has also introduced special bus services from December 4 to December 7, running every 15-20 minutes between Dadar Railway Station and Chaityabhoomi. Additional buses have been deployed on routes which pass through Dadar, to ensure seamless access to the event.
For convenience, temporary daily bus passes priced at Rs. 60 are being offered to devotees traveling to Chaityabhoomi. Bus supervisors and conductors will be stationed at key locations to assist passengers, while extra buses will operate on dedicated routes to accommodate the increased demand.
BEST and railway authorities have coordinated closely with municipal and state government officials to ensure that all operations run smoothly. Additionally, crowd management officers and intelligence personnel will monitor the situation on the ground, ensuring timely intervention in case of emergencies.
