A six-year-old girl died after the roof of her house at Jawahar Nagar,Goregaon, caved in on Wednesday morning. The victim,Fagun Gohil, was sleeping when the roof of her single room flat on the third floor of the building collapsed. The incident happened around 9.30 am.
Though Fagun was rushed to Cooper Hospital, she was declared dead on arrival, said a family friend.
Faguns older brother Jay and her mother Rupal Bhavesh Gohil were saved as they were in the adjoining bathroom.
The family shifted to this house only a year and a half ago, said a relative. Bhavesh Gohil,Faguns father, runs a tailoring shop in the Jawahar Nagar area.
The building,Bharat Bhuvan in Jawahar Nagar,is more than 40 years old and was in a dilapidated condition.
The BMC had issued a notice to the building owners in 2009,instructing them to repair the building. But they didnt pay heed to the civic body, said Faguns neighbour Natwarlal Upadhyay (77) who has been residing in the building for the past 25 years. Most tenants pay rents ranging from Rs 100-150 per month.
The building, which is a ground plus three structure, houses 31 rooms. There are around 130 people living in the building. We have given a 24-hour evacuation notice to the building, said ward officer B T Kapse of P South ward.
We had asked the owners repair the building in the past, said Kapse.
We had also launched prosecution against the landlord in 2009 but the case was stuck as he passed away, said an official at the ward office.
The building was being considered for redevelopment, said another official.
