The project for drawing up a concept plan for Mumbai for the next four decades will be awarded to Singapore-based firm Surbana International. The Mumbai Transformation Support Unit (MTSU),which is commissioning the project, has selected Surbana from among four shortlisted international firms.
The concept plan will outline a detailed development programme that will shape the growth of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region until 2052. MTSU project director UPS Madan said the contract will be formally awarded following a nod from the government. It will take care of land use pattern, housing needs and possible transport linkages. It will also look at mitigation of the environmental impact of development, said Madan, adding there would be an intermediate plan until 2032. The plan is expected to be completed in one year.
The concept plan will determine factors like FSI that govern the vertical limit of construction. It will also narrow in on three select locations each in the city, suburbs and the region outside Mumbai district and chart out a masterplan.
