Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief Ajit Pawar condemned the Monday’s incident at the Supreme Court, where a lawyer threw a shoe at Chief Justice of India B R Gavai.

In a post on X, Ajit Pawar said, “The Supreme Court is the highest temple of justice in our democracy. The attempt to attack Hon’ble Chief Justice Shri Bhushan Gavai ji is an attack on the very foundation of our democratic and judicial system. Such incidents have no place in a civilised society.”

He further emphasised that maintaining the dignity and integrity of the judiciary is the moral responsibility of every citizen.

“Any attempt to undermine or disrespect the judiciary is an assault on the principles of democracy itself. Strict action must be taken against those responsible for this shameful act,” he added.

He also extended his support to the judiciary and called upon citizens to uphold faith in the justice system, reiterating that respect for judicial institutions is integral to the strength of the nation’s democracy.

On Monday, 71-year-old advocate Rakesh Kishore threw shoe at Chief Justice of India B R Gavai during proceedings inside the Supreme Court, claiming the CJI’s remarks had insulted “sanatan dharma”.

The advocate claimed during questioning that he was “unhappy with the CJI’s remarks” during a recent hearing of a plea seeking the restoration of a Lord Vishnu idol at the Khajuraho temple complex in Madhya Pradesh.
