BJP leader and Mumbai District Central Co-operative Bank chairman Pravin Darekar Thursday announced that former Shiv Sena (UBT) BMC corporator Tejasvee Ghosalkar has been appointed to the board of directors of the bank.
Tejasvee Ghosalkar’s nomination fills the vacancy left by her late husband, Abhishek Ghosalkar, also a former corporator, who was shot dead in February last year. “After his tragic death, the board had the authority to appoint a replacement. As a goodwill gesture, Tejasvee Ghosalkar has been unanimously nominated. The process is fully legal and in accordance with the bank’s rules,” Darekar said.
The move comes just over a month after Tejasvee Ghosalkar resigned from her position as the head of the women’s wing of Shiv Sena (UBT) in the Dahisar Assembly segment. On May 13, she submitted her resignation via WhatsApp, citing personal reasons, while also expressing her displeasure with the functioning of the party’s local leadership in North Mumbai. Her resignation had fuelled rumours of growing discontent within the Uddhav Thackeray-led faction.
While Tejasvee Ghosalkar has not officially quit the Shiv Sena (UBT), her appointment – backed by a senior BJP leader – is being seen as politically significant, especially given its timing ahead of the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. Party insiders said she had been under pressure to quit the party, a claim supported by Vinod Ghosalkar, senior UBT leader and her father-in-law, who recently alleged attempts to draw her away from the party fold.
The Mumbai District Central Co-operative Bank is a key institution in the city’s cooperative banking space, with board members representing multiple parties, including the BJP, NCP, and the Shiv Sena (UBT).
