Shiv Sena leaders join Opp demand for rectification voter list in Maharashtra

Speaking to reporters in Buldhana, he said every voter should be linked to Aadhaar and death certificates, allowing immediate deletion of deceased voters’ names.

“Why is the EC not deleting dual voters or names of those who are dead?” Gaikwad asked, claiming that in his district, some voters who died 30 years ago still appear on current lists.

He estimated that about one lakh voters fall into this category.

Gaikwad also questioned the cutoff date of July 25, when voter list updates were halted, pointing out that many citizens became eligible to vote after that date.

Another Sena leader and Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam said there was nothing wrong with demanding corrections if discrepancies exist.

“The EC should make the necessary rectifications, and we support this demand,” he said.

Opposition leaders, including Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena president Raj Thackeray, have demanded that local body elections be postponed until the anomalies are rectified.

Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam acknowledged errors in the voter lists but called the opposition demand to delay polls extreme, noting that local body elections have been pending for five to seven years.

“There are over 9.5 crore voters in the state and more than one lakh voter lists. Claiming a problem in everything is a bit far-fetched,” he said.
