Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis will inaugurate the second phase of the Samruddhi Mahamarg stretch from Bharvir village in Igatpuri taluka to Shirdi on May 26.
This was confirmed by Sanjay Yadav, joint managing director (II) of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC)—the project implementing authority.
Last December, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Phase 1 of the Samruddhi Mahamarg comprising 520km stretch between Shirdi and Nagpur.
Once phase 2 of the project is inaugurated, the total stretch of 600km from Nagpur to Bharvir village in Igatpuri taluka will be opened to the public.
“The remaining 100km stretch up till Vadpe in Thane will be completed by end of this year or by March next year,” said Yadav.
There are two interchanges in the new stretch between Bharvir and Shirdi. Meanwhile, since there have been many accidents on phase 1 of the project ever since it was opened for vehicular movement, a committee led by the Regional Transport Office (RTO), state traffic police and an NGO have suggested the MSRDC to paint a few spots and put in place equipment that will produce the sound of police siren to keep drivers alert.
Furthermore, the initiative of planting trees on the medians of the Samruddhi Mahamarg has been taken up. “Trees have been planted but they are watered with the help of tankers. Soon, a provision for drip irrigation will be made so that the plants are watered regularly,” said Yadav.
