Sessions court denies interim relief to Jaipur brothers

A sessions court Wednesday refused to grant interim relief on an anticipatory bail application (ABA) moved by Sandeep and Sanjay Chhabra, owners of Motison Jewellers in Jaipur

A sessions court Wednesday refused to grant interim relief on an anticipatory bail application (ABA) moved by Sandeep and Sanjay Chhabra, owners of Motison Jewellers in Jaipur, who have been accused in the IPL betting case.

The case has been adjourned till July 3 and is being investigated by Mumbai Police Crime Branch.

Opposing the ABA,the police, which issued look out circulars for Sandeep alias Pawan Jaipur and his brother Sanjay Chhabra alias Sanjay Jaipur, told the court that the duo’s name had cropped up several times during investigation. The brothers were represented by senior lawyer Adik Shirodkar, who admitted before the court that the brothers were in Dubai, adding they had not fled after the betting racket came to light.

According to the prosecution, the brothers escaped to Dubai last month with the help of another accused, actor Virendra Randhawa alias Vindoo Dara Singh. The duo allegedly handed over three cell phones to Vindoo while fleeing.

The police told the court that several numbers saved in the cellphones under false names had led them to other bookies. These SIM cards, according to the police, were procured under fake names, due to which a forgery charge was added in the case, along with cheating, conspiracy and sections of the Mumbai Gambling (Prevention) Act.
