Sea link 2nd arm likely next month

The second arm of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link has neared completion after the last concrete segment was lifted on Wednesday.

The second arm of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link has neared completion after the last concrete segment was lifted on Wednesday. With the arm now almost fully connected, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) officials said that it would be thrown open to public next month.

MSRDC chief engineer S Sabnis said,“The final segment was lifted today. It will now be aligned with the remaining segments so it becomes stable. This is likely to take five more days, but work like erecting barricades, preparing parapet will take a month’s time.”

At present, vehicles only ply on the four lanes of the single operational carriageway. Opening of the 18-metre wide second carriageway would ensure maximum usage of the Rs 1,600 crore sea link.

The first carriageway of the BWSL,being built by Hindustan Construction Company, was inaugurated by Congress President Sonia Gandhi on June 30 2009.

As many as 17,000 vehicles use the BWSL everyday, around 50 per cent less that what had been estimated by the MSRDC. Sources said until the other two links — the Worli-Haji Ali Link and from Haji Ali to Nariman Point line— is opened, the response is likely to remain the same. The MSRDC has also finalised the contractor to be awarded the work on the Worli Haji Ali link, but no decision has been taken by the state cabinet on this.

MSRDC officials said that the second carriageway would be thrown open for public in February or first week of March. “The decision on when to open it depends on the government now. We have completed the job from our end.”
