Starting September 1, schools, colleges and industrial training institutes (ITI) located in the suburban belt of Mumbai will provide self-defence training to female students. On Wednesday, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, cabinet minister for skill development and guardian minister of suburban Mumbai, wrote to the district collector emphasising the need to implement necessary measures for the safety of female students at educational institutes.

In his letter, he said that educational institutes should rope in NGOs for self-defence training to women.

“The increasing crimes against women and children are a matter of concern for the government, administration and our society. The incident that occurred in Badlapur has provided public suggestions for preventive measures. Such incidents are happening due to negligence regarding women’s safety,” Lodha said in his letter.

“Keeping this in mind, strict instructions should be given to all educational institutions from kindergarten to postgraduate levels in the Mumbai suburban area. Schools, colleges, and various institutions should also thoroughly verify the staff appointed by them to ensure no untoward incidents occur, and everyone should take precautions,” Lodha’s letter said.

Besides this, the minister also directed that it should be strictly enforced that female sanitation workers are responsible for cleaning washrooms meant for underage girls and girls studying in the tenth grade and police verification of the sanitation workers also needs to be carried out.

Alongside this, Lodha also directed installation of CCTV cameras inside the schools and female staffers should be assigned duty outside every female washroom.

The minister also directed that a separate committee of female parents should be established in the school and educational institutes should put up posters displaying the 181 helpline number for women.
