SC verdict on Zudpi jungle will boost development of Vidarbha region: Fadnavis
In 1980, when the forest act was brought by the Centre, Madhya Pradesh got its records corrected but Maharashtra continued with its revenue records showing Zudpi jungle as forest land, Fadnavis said.

Terming the Supreme Court verdict on Zudpi jungle as a landmark decision, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday said it will pave the way for the development of Vidarbha region of Maharashtra. He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Chief Justice of India Justice B R Gavai.
“It is indeed a landmark and historic decision, and I wholeheartedly thank the CJI. The SC order will be a huge boost for development of Vidarbha which was stalled for the past several decades as Zudpi jungle came under the reserved forest category. Though SC order paves the way for development, it also has put certain terms and conditions which are necessary to ensure perfect balance between the development and environment,” Fadnavis said.
While outlining the significance of the SC order, Fadnavis said, “For the past 45 years, leaders across political parties in Vidarbha region had been fighting for the cause. The struggle is now over, and this is a huge relief for the people of Vidarbha region. As all the development which was adversely affected will now be fast-tracked.”
When Maharashtra was created, Vidarbha was under Central India (CP & Berar). Then the revenue records categorised Zudpi jungle under Forest Conservation Act. In 1980, when the forest act was brought by the Centre, Madhya Pradesh got its records corrected. But Maharashtra continued with its revenue records showing Zudpi jungle as forest land, Fadnavis said.
“During my first tenure as CM (2014-2019), I had set up a committee whose report was then submitted to the Supreme Court. Almost all the CEC recommendations have been accepted by the apex court,” he said.
“The SC verdict will hugely benefit the slum colonies which have come up on the Zudpi jungle land for decades in a city like Nagpur. With today’s order it will help the administration to regularise the residential colonies, slums in rural and urban places. The important buildings like Nagpur Railway Station, High Court building etc have all been built on the Zudpi jungle land,” he said.
