Four persons were arrested Thursday for allegedly stabbing and killing two men at an under-construction building in Santacruz. The police has cited long-running personal animosity between two groups as the motive behind the attack.

The accused, identified as Mohsin Behleem (36), Sachin Pawar (34), Sonu Hajare (19) and Sanjiv Teenghute (21), were caught Thursday in Bhandup, where they had been drinking together. All of them have been remanded in police custody till August 1. Six knives have been recovered from their possession.

According to the police, Pawar, who is an auto rickshaw driver and lives in Mulund, had driven the three arrested men and a fourth unidentified man to Shastri Nagar in Santacruz West at 7 pm Wednesday.

The deceased, Nadeem Khatri and Gulam Ahmad Shaikh, worked as security guards at the site. Both sets of men had been employed with the builder but had never got along.

“The accused Nadeem shot at the deceased but missed. The other accused then stabbed the deceased multiple times and fled from the spot in the auto rickshaw,” said Satya Narayan Choudhary, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Zone IX.

Also adding to the animosity was the fact that Nadeem was a witness in two criminal cases filed against Mohsin’s brother Zulfikar in 2011 and 2013 under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act.

Chaudhry said that conspiracy to kill the two men was hatched by Mohsin, who is serving a life term for murder and is out on parole, and Sachin, who is out on bail after being arrested for robbing a petrol pump, when they met inside Kolhapur Jail earlier this year. Police is on the lookout for the fifth man.
