Salem to move European court for cancelling extradition

Gangster Abu Salem, who survived a bid on his life inside Taloja Jail last month, will move the European Court of Human Rights seeking cancellation of his extradition to India

Gangster Abu Salem, who survived a bid on his life inside Taloja Jail last month, will move the European Court of Human Rights seeking cancellation of his extradition to India following the alleged violation of his human rights..

Salem’s lawyer from Portugal,Manuel Luis Ferreira, approached the designated TADA court Monday and after receiving the court’s permission, met him for two hours to decide on the next course of action. Salem is facing trial for his alleged role in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

One of the conditions in the extradition treaty signed between India and Portugal while securing his custody spoke of Salem’s safety in India. After the attack,Salem’s lawyers claimed he was not safe here and that the extradition clause on safety had clearly been breached.

This was the second time Salem was attacked inside jail. Earlier in July 2010,his co-accused Mustafa Dossa had allegedly jabbed him with a spoon at Arthur Road prison. Following the incident,Salem was shifted to Taloja prison.
