(Express Photo)Saif Ali Khan Stabbing Case News Update: After a 60-hour manhunt, a 31-year-old man has been detained from Durg in Chhattisgarh in connection with the brazen attack on actor Saif Ali Khan inside his Bandra home on Thursday.
According to a Railway Protection Force (RPF) official, “based on information from Mumbai Police, a suspect has been detained at Durg this afternoon”.
He was on board the Jnaneswari Express, which runs from Mumbai Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) to Kolkata Shalimar (SHM) on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, said an official. It departs from LTT at 8.35 pm and arrives at SHM at 4.35 am.
Mumbai police sources said they zeroed in on a person who boarded the train and shared his photo with the RPF. Acting on this information, the RPF in Chhattisgarh detained a man, who was travelling in the general coach.
Following this, a team from the Mumbai police reached Chhattisgarh by air and took his custody. The police and RPF are jointly questioning him, sources said.
A day earlier, the police in Mumbai had detained a person who resembled the suspect but it turned out to be a false lead.
So far, it has been established that after being spotted at Lucky Junction area in Bandra, the accused likely boarded a local train, travelled to Dadar, purchased a mobile phone cover from a shop near platform 1 of Dadar (West) railway station, and headed towards Kabutarkhana.
His movements were recorded on the CCTV camera at the mobile shop at 9.04 am, sources said. The police are likely to record the statement of the person who sold the phone cover to the accused.
Another source said that four dozen teams were carrying out search operations in different parts of the city, including Dadar, Worli-Prabhadevi, Byculla, Churchgate and Cuffe Parade.
On Thursday early morning, between 2 am and 2:30 am, the man snuck into Khan’s apartment and injured a domestic help. Later, when Khan intervened, the man stabbed him six times with a knife before escaping.
Khan, who bled profusely, was rushed to the Lilavati hospital by his family in an autorickshaw, where he underwent surgery. Senior doctors say he is stable and out of danger.
