Demanding clean drinking water, the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena on Saturday held a demonstration outside the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The party gave the civic body ruled by the Shiv Sena-BJP,which also has the support of an MNS corporator, seven days to act or else face an intense agitation. The party was seeking urgent measures to ensure clean and sufficient drinking water, besides other demands like improvement of roads and transport facilities. Armed with a memorandum,a delegation of party workers tried to meet Municipal Commissioner Puroshattam Bhapkar. They were told he was not in his office, said a party worker. They asked the security personnel to be allowed into his cabin but were denied permission irking them further. They stuck a copy of the memorandum on a window of the cabin. Around 100 party workers thereafter held a demonstration outside the office for an hour. They were led by MNS city chief Satnam Singh Gulati and Maharashtra Navnirman Vidyarthi Sena (MNVS) district chief Summit Khambekar. Gulati said there was heavy rain in the region but people were facing drinking water scarcity. The little water citizens get is contaminated and spreads disease. Roads are bad. Garbage is everywhere, Gulati said. Another demand pertained to the proposed move of the state transport department to take over the Aurangabad Municipal Transport (AMT),operated by the AMC. The party demanded that all employees of the intra-city bus service be accommodated in the state transport body before the formal transfer is completed. City Chowk police station inspector Khushalchand Baheti said 15-20 party workers were booked under relevant sections of the Bombay Police Act dealing with unlawful assembly and holding agitations without permission. No arrest was made till late in the evening.
