Sachin in RS: Sena questions ‘intentions’

A day after Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray welcomed the nomination of Sachin Tendulkar to the Rajya Sabha as an “honour for his talent” and said it should not be made a “political issue”,rival Shiv Sena on Saturday raised doubts over Congress intentions for nominating the cricketer, questioning the timing of the nomination in particular.

In an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamna, the Sena said the nomination “at this juncture” raises doubts over intentions of the Congress but it will not divert attention of people from corruption charges the party has been facing.

“No work done by Congress is straight… the intention is not clear. There is a need to check their intentions in the hurried recommendation and approval for the Rajya Sabha nomination for Sachin,” the editorial stated.

The editorial added that many Sachin fans are not pleased. “Sachin has stayed away from politics so far. His nomination comes as a surprise. Many fans were expecting a Bharat Ratna for the masterblaster but the MP tag will be given to him instead.”

The Sena, however, agreed with the MNS view that it was indeed an honour for Sachin but said others like Sunil Gavaskar,Kapil Dev,Rahul Dravid who have retired from cricket could have been picked instead.

“Sachin is still playing and has not expressed any desire to retire. Rajya Sabha is a House of seniors. Even Lata Mangeshkar was nominated but she attended the House for only a few days. The Congress is trying to divert attention but won’t succeed,” the editorial stated.

Sena’s alliance partner Republican Party of India also welcomed Sachin’s nomination.

RPI leader Ramdas Athavale said Sachin should accept it as a recognition of his work and help resolve sport-related issues. Athavale,a former MP,was, however, critical of Sachin “accepting a Congress quota nomination.”
