RTI impact: Thane civic body to probe illegal constructions

The Thane Municipal Corporation is set to initiate a probe against civic officials for allowing illegal constructions to come up in the Majiwada-Manpada ward.

The Thane Municipal Corporation is set to initiate a probe against civic officials for allowing illegal constructions to come up in the Majiwada-Manpada ward. The move comes after Thane-based RTI proponent Nainesh Dolas moved an RTI application seeking information regarding unauthorised constructions in the region.

Replying to Dolass application the civic town planning department said that the plan for the constructions was not cleared by them. Dolas then sought names of those responsible for checking illegal constructions.

I had official information on unauthorised construction and the names and designations of officers who ought to have prevented this. As this was a blatant dereliction of duty on the part of civic officials I have sought their dismissal from service, said Dolas.

This is the first time that a citizen has provided proof of dereliction of duty by civic officials and sought their dismissal.

In his application,Dolas reasoned that no unauthorised construction can come up in a day or in a month. He has pointed that the clerk,junior engineer,ward officer,assistant commissioner are responsible for removal of encroachment and prevention of unauthorised constructions.
