Feb 28 deadline nears, over 70,000 RTE seats in pvt schools remain unclaimed
Following a lottery-based selection process, 1,01,967 students were allotted seats and given a deadline of February 28 to confirm their admissions.

More than 73,000 out of over 1 lakh students allotted seats under the Right to Education (RTE) Act in private and unaided schools are yet to confirm their admissions, even as the deadline for the same, February 28, is nearing.
Under the RTE Act, 25 per cent of seats in private and unaided schools are reserved for children from socially and economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with the government reimbursing their fees.
This year, 3,05,152 applications were received for 1,09,087 seats under the RTE Act across 8,863 schools across state, including 5,157 in Mumbai.
Following a lottery-based selection process, 1,01,967 students were allotted seats and given a deadline of February 28 to confirm their admissions. However, as of Wednesday, only 28,920 students have confirmed their admissions leaving 73,047 seats vacant.
An official from the Directorate of Primary Education, which oversees the RTE admissions, stated, “Considering the number of confirmed admissions, we will take a decision a day before the deadline on whether to extend it.”
While an extension is likely, officials are urging parents to check their child’s admission status directly on the official RTE portal rather than relying solely on SMS notifications for updates.
“Usually, applicants receive an SMS once they are allotted a seat. However, there can sometimes be issues, and we advise parents to verify their application status to avoid missing out,” the official added.
Delays in obtaining required admission documents may also be contributing to the low confirmation numbers, the official said.
Last year, delays in the RTE admission process left over 11,000 seats vacant. This year, authorities aim to complete admissions by May to minimise the number of vacant seats.
