RPI leader killed,police probe extortion angle

A ward pramukh of the Republican Party of India,Vijay Nagvekar (50),was allegedly stabbed to death by two unidentified people at a hotel near his office at Charni Road on Saturday morning,the police said.

A ward pramukh of the Republican Party of India (RPI),Vijay Nagvekar (50),was allegedly stabbed to death by two unidentified people at a hotel near his office at Charni Road on Saturday morning,the police said.

Nagvekar,who was also a real-estate agent,used to stay in Chira Bazaar in South Mumbai. On Saturday morning,he was sitting in a hotel near his real-estate office along with two people when two unidentified persons came on a bike and allegedly stabbed him in the stomach with knives before fleeing,the police said.

“The two unidentified people stabbed him and fled. The police came to know about the incident and rushed him to J J Hospital where he was declared dead,” said police inspector V Joshi from the V P Road police station.

As per the police,Nagvekar had in 2008 lodged a complaint regarding threat calls from the Pandav Putra gang members. “Nagvekar use to deal in property and the gang members had come to know about a particular sale of property after which they had started targeting him for extortion,” said an officer of the V P Road police station. “The accused and some members of the Pandav Putra gang were arrested then. We are investigating the possibilities of the murder being carried out in retribution,” said Joshi.

“We have started detaining the gang members,” the officer added.
