Robbers from Delhi caught in the act in Malad house

The three had been coming to city every month for past two years

Three robbers — who frequently travelled from New Delhi to Mumbai to rob residential premises every month in the past two years — were arrested by the Bangur Nagar police on Tuesday evening. They were arrested while in the middle of a heist at a businessman’s house at Evershine Nagar in Malad west.

Police said Ajay Singh Chowdhury (26),Mohammed Arman Khan (22) and Ali Salim Mirza (22) hail from Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area.

Dressed in suits, they entered the premises of Saialsar Society on Tuesday and told the watchmen they had to meet a friend who lived on the third floor. The watchmen in his statement said the “men were dressed in suits and spoke with confidence, which did not raise suspicion”. The three had chosen the residence of Saurabh Rajendra Singh (28),who was out to attend a function.

After 15 minutes, residents from the opposite building heard noises from Singh’s flat and alerted the Saialsar Society. Singh’s neighbours went to check the apartment and found it locked from inside. When they did not get a response after knocking repeatedly on the door, they latched it from outside and called the police.

“We rushed to the spot and found the three trying to break open the cupboards,” said S Pawar,Assistant Police Inspector from Bangur Nagar police station.

During interrogation, the three confessed that they came to Mumbai every month for the past two years only for house break-ins. They would stay at cheap lodges at Grant Road and look for their targets in the far suburbs. They would walk into a building and if questioned by the security, said they had the wrong address and left. If they got access, they looked for a locked apartment. Once they found such a house, they took out rods and cutters, which they would hide under their vests. After breaking into a house and looting it,they casually walked out and hailed a taxi to Grant Road.

“They returned to Delhi with the booty and came back to Mumbai the following month. We are also trying to find the place where they stayed in Grant Road,” said Pawar.
