Roads will now ‘tell’ traffic to stop,or go slow

City roads will soon instruct traffic with signs like STOP,GO SLOW painted on them.

City roads will soon instruct traffic with signs like STOP,GO SLOW painted on them. The civic body will get such signages painted on roads as part of the scientific lane-marking system.

The civic body has shortlisted five firms to carry out the feasibility study. “There is widespread traffic indiscipline, lane violations and lack of proper signage on Mumbai roads. The idea is to have roads with signs painted on them and sign boards at regular intervals like it is followed in most countries in the west,” said additional municipal commissioner RA Rajeev.

The firms will also mark cycle lanes on roads. At present there are only lane markings and zebra crossings painted on roads.

“Due to congestion on roads during peak hours, motorists are unable to see traffic lights and don’t know where the turn is. The road paintings will indicate 200 m before a signal which lane one has to be in to take a turn. This will indirectly induce lane discipline too,” said Rajeev.

The BMC had proposed localised cycling tracks with a view to decongest roads in September last year. The city has around 17 lakh vehicles with an average of 300 new vehicles added to the city everyday. The civic body wants to demarcate parts of roads as cycle tracks to help citizens use cycles for short distances.
