Indian Mujahideen founder Riyaz Bhatkal was in his native place Karnataka when serial blasts in Ahmedabad,Surat and Delhi took place, according to Mumbai Police Crime Branch. Riyaz and his brother Iqbal, alleged conspirators of blasts across the country between 2005 and 2008,on the wanted list of investigating agencies, are believed to have fled the country. Filing additional evidence as part of a supplementary chargesheet against 21 arrested suspects in the special MCOCA court on Monday, the Crime Branch said records of Riyazs mobile phone calls between June and July,2008 reveal Riyaz was moving in Karnataka, calling up the accused (arrested later) and planning the attack. He was allegedly in contact with them after the blasts. The Crime Branch had in 2008 arrested 21 suspects, including Pune software engineer Mansoor Peerbhoy. Peerbhoy is said to have headed the media wing of the terror group responsible for sending pre-blast mails to media houses by hacking into unsecured wi-fi accounts in and around Mumbai. Over 2,000 pages of additional evidence were submitted in court on Monday. Special Public Prosecutor Raja Thackeray said,We have filed additional evidence, which includes the chargesheet filed by the Gujarat police, besides telephone records of the accused and the wanted accused. Riyazs telephone records show that between June 1 and July 31,2008,he made and received calls relayed mostly through cell sites in Karnataka. Some areas mentioned are Mangalore,Permannur,Someswar. These records, now part of the evidence against the 21 accused, will be secondary evidence to substantiate the prosecution contention that the Bhatkal brothers had been in contact with the accused at the time of the offence. A senior crime branch official said,We have attached telephone records of the arrested accused, which show they were in contact with the wanted accused. According to the prosecution, the IM carried out several blasts across the country and sent emails, before the blasts,to media houses. On July 26,there was a blast in Ahmedbad and the next day,IEDs were found in Surat. The Mumbai crime branch cracked the case later and arrested 21. Several of them have been taken to Gujarat to probe their role in the blast. Others are in Delhi, while a few are in Mumbai.
