A day after an impasse over seat-sharing among the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) parties, Congress’s Ramesh Chennithala on Saturday met Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray to discuss and resolve the seat-sharing issues ahead of the Assembly elections in the state.

The meeting held at Thackeray’s residence ‘Matoshree’ was also attended by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut and Congress leader Naseem Khan. After the meeting, Chennithala said that there is no dispute between the Congress and the Shiv Sena (UBT). Raut, however, advised the Congress that it should give importance to regional parties, and not ignore them.

Raut indirectly also took a dig at the Congress saying that the issues between the MVA allies were resolved because the parties wanted it resolved. “Congress is a big political party. We are a regional party. National parties like Congress should give place to regional parties in that state. National politics is going on in the country because of the regional parties in Maharashtra, Karnataka and other states. This is why (PM Narendra) Modi could also become the Prime Minister. The INDIA alliance also has maximum regional parties,” Raut said.

The Shiv Sena (UBT) spokesperson’s comments came even as Chennithala said that there were “no differences” between Raut and state Congress chief Nana Patole. “The issues have been resolved. The MVA leaders will be meeting today for the final discussion on the seat sharing and remaining issues will be resolved during the meeting,” Chennithala said.

Speaking to reporters, Patole said that Chennithala would also meet NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar and that further discussions would take place in Delhi on Sunday. “We have always said that seat allocation should be based on merit,” Patole said, referring to discussions on constituencies in Vidarbha.

“The issues between the NCP and Shiv Sena (UBT) have been resolved… because both parties were ready to cooperate and resolve issues mutually. We both have the desire to sit together and solve the problem. Under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray and Sharad Pawar, we have solved the rift in many seats. Chennithala will be meeting party chief Uddhav Thackeray at Matoshree and will discuss the issues. Let us see how it goes,” Raut had said earlier in the day.
