After a week of dry spell, Mumbai and its neighbouring districts are slated to experience heavy downpour. In its five-day bulletin forecast released Thursday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) sounded a yellow alert, indicating the possibility of heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning, for Mumbai and its neighbouring districts until Monday (September 18), while an orange alert has been issued for Thane and Palghar districts on Sunday (September 17).
Speaking to The Indian Express, meteorologists and weather experts have attributed the upcoming surge in monsoon to the low pressure area which is currently brewing over the state of Odisha.
Sushma Nair, scientist from IMD Mumbai said, “The city will experience a wet weekend with the peak rainfall activity to unleash on Sunday. The city can experience good rainfall activity owing to a well marked low pressure area which is currently positioned in North Odisha. As the low pressure system moves further towards Chhattisgarh, the rain activity will increase in the city”
Meanwhile, Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services said, “Over the course of the next two days, this will move towards Vidarbha. The westerly winds will intensity thereby bringing rainfall over the entire west coast from Gujarat to Goa.”
“While Gujarat may receive very heavy rains, Mumbai, Thane and Dahanu may receive moderate showers with intense spells of heavy rains in some pockets starting on Friday. Mumbai will experience heightened rain activity until September 21 at least, following which the intensity will start reducing,” said Palawat.
The upcoming monsoon showers will bring relief to citizens currently reeling under a hot spell. Even as the weather bureau issued a yellow alert on Thursday night, between Wednesday and Thursday morning, IMD’s Santacruz weather station recorded 13 mm rainfall whereas the Colaba coastal observatory registered trace rainfall. In meteorology, trace denotes that while the amount of downpour was greater than zero mm, the proportions were too little to be registered by standard units of measurement.
Meanwhile, during the same period, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) Automatic Weather System found that the maximum showers were recorded in the western suburbs at 8.23 mm followed closely by the eastern suburbs where 7.55 mm rain was recorded. The island city division registered 1.28 mm showers.
