After a break from monsoon rain for more than a week, the city woke up to showers as several pockets and suburbs recorded significant amount of rainfall starting from the intervening night of Thursday and Friday.
Rain continued till late evening on Friday with the city skyline being cloudy throughout the day.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Friday afternoon issued a yellow alert for Mumbai indicating heavy rains to continue for the next 24 hours. IMD’s Santacruz observatory recorded 53 mm of rains till 8.30 am on Friday, while the coastal observatory at Colaba recorded 45 mm of rains. Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, Santacruz recorded 29.9 mm of rain, while Colaba recorded 38 mm of rain.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) automatic weather stations (AWS) showed 19 mm of rain in the island city, followed by 32 mm in western suburbs and 37 mm in Eastern Suburbs till 4 pm Friday.
The civic body’s data also showed that several pockets in island city recorded rains above 100 mm which included Colaba with 106 mm and Sandhurst Road with 102 mm. Dadar recorded 92 mm. The highest quota of rainfall in western suburbs was recorded in Andheri at 72 mm, while in Eastern Suburbs 50 mm was recorded in Kurla.
Sunil Kamble, Director of India Meteorological Department (Mumbai) said that over the next three four days, heavy rains may continue to lash Mumbai along with Konkan region.
“If you see, for the past 3-4 days, it has been raining in all the districts. In some places, the intensity is more and in others, it is less. But in the coming 3-4 days, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in South Konkan and North Konkan. When it comes to North Maharashtra and Vidarbha, there is a possibility of moderate rain” Kamble said on Friday.
The weather bureau in its five day forecast has also stated that the rains will intensify post July 16, owing to a cyclonic formation in Bay of Bengal.
Several low lying areas on Friday recorded water logging as well. The Andheri subway was shut for vehicular and pedestrian movement due to waterlogging, and several stretches in SV Road in the western suburbs also recorded significant rain.
Meanwhile, the weather bureau has also issued a yellow alert for several districts in Maharashtra including Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Aurangabad, Jalna, Osmanabad, Akola, Bhandara, Chandrapur, Gadchiroli, Nagpur, Yavatmal and Washim for next 48 hours.
