In a respite from heat and dust, light spells of rain lashed Mumbai Wednesday evening and is likely to improve the Air Quality Index (AQI) that has been hovering around poor and moderate categories for a month now.
The Indian Meteorology Department (IMD) issued an yellow alert, indicating light to moderate rains in the next 24 hours, coupled with thunderstorms and lightning.
Sushma Nair, scientist from IMD, said, “As of now, we have issued a forecast stating that rain will continue till Thursday afternoon. At present, there’s an easterly trough that has formed in the Arabian Sea, which has led to the formation of moisture. This condition is contributing to rainfall in Mumbai.
The IMD has also issued yellow alert for Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Sholapur districts.
“We will be monitoring the trough movement for the next few days and udpate the forecast accordingly. As of now, there is no chance of heavy rain in Mumbai, Thane and Palghar districts.”
