It has been learnt that nearly 60 per cent of work in the railways’ part of the Carnac Road Over Bridge (ROB) in Mumbai is complete, and the work in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) jurisdiction is slated to begin in a week.
Location: Carnac Road Over Bridge (ROB) between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Masjid Bunder, linking South Mumbai with vital areas like Mohammad Ali Road, Crawford Market, Wadi Bunder Junction, and CSMT Junction
Expected Date of Completion: October 2025
Total Length: 305 metre (70 metre in railway jurisdiction, 235 metre in BMC jurisdiction)
Total Cost: Rs 50.50 crore
Bridge Specifications: 2+2 lane steel bridge with cement and bitumen road surface

Progress: Open way girder launched; remaining portion to be launched by December 2024 (pending railway’s permission)
Steel Used: 1,100 ton for the railway section
Pending Work: 2 railway blocks (three hours each) for slab casting and girder launching

Scope: Approach road construction
Pending Tasks: Shifting of local eatery (Junka Bhakari Kendra) and BEST power sub-station
Reason for Delay: Space used for launching girders in the railway area
Work is complex, especially on the railway portion, and can be carried out only during non-operational hours at night
A senior BMC officer confirmed that 60 per cent of the railway portion is complete. The entire bridge work is expected to be completed by October 2025 and will be opened to traffic after obtaining all required permissions. The bridge will be a crucial link for South Mumbai traffic.
