Rahul should explain why Shinde stays as home minister, says BJP

The BJP leader said the state government had tabled the report only after directives from the Bombay High Court.

Seize upon Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on Friday that the Maharashtra government should reconsider its decision to reject the Adarsh probe report, the state BJP accused the party of double standards and asked for the resignation of Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde for his alleged role in the scam and of Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan for rejecting the report.

“It’s a classic case of too little, too late. If Rahul was so concerned about the corruption, why did he not raise his voice when Sushilkumar Shinde was made the home minister. Shinde’s role in controversial Adarsh Housing Cooperative Society was known to one and all,” state BJP president Devendra Fadnavis said.

“Even now if he is so worried about the Maharashtra government’s rejection of Adarsh report,he should have taken a firm stand demanding the resignation of Shinde,” he said, adding that Gandhi’s concerns about high moral standards were nothing but political opportunism.

“The big question that Rahul Gandhi and Prithviraj Chavan need to answer is that under whose pressure and circumstances was the Adarsh commission report put on hold in monsoon session (July-August). The chief minister took the decision to withhold the report at the eleventh hour. The people should know if there was pressure from the high command to withhold the report and why,” Fadnavis said. “The AICC’s game plan to single out Chavan for the report’s rejection is not going to absolve the central leadership of their responsibilities. The central and state Congress are equally responsible for the cover-up in Adarsh.”

The BJP leader said the state government had tabled the report only after directives from the Bombay High Court.

Earlier,Vinod Tawde,Leader of the Opposition in Legislative Council, said,“The chief minister has no right to continue in the government. Now,his own leaders are expressing unhappiness with the decision on Adarsh.”
