A delegation of Maharashtra Congress led by Leader of Opposition in the state Legislative Assembly Vijay Wadettiwar met Maharashtra Governor C P Radhakrishnan on Saturday to discuss about the alleged “poor” law and order situation in the state. The delegation also sought the arrest of ruling alliance leaders, who issued threats against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.

“Law and order in the state has completely collapsed and political and social instability has arisen in the state. Farmers affected by heavy rains in Vidarbha and Marathwada are yet to get help. Due to this, there is a lot of unrest among people, especially farmers,” Wadettiwar stated in a memorandum. He further demanded the arrest of Shiv Sena leader and MLA Sanjay Gaikwad and BJP Rajya Sabha MP Anil Bonde, who had allegedly issued threats against Rahul Gandhi.

The memorandum stated that Gandhi’s life was in danger due to these threats but no action was taken against Gaikwad and Bonde. Wadettiwar also accused Chief Minister Eknath Shinde of being a mute spectator on the issue.

“In a democracy, everyone has the right to criticise the Opposition, but it is not legal for people’s representatives to use language that incites violence and endanger life while protesting. In this case, the Chief Minister, the Home Minister and the police took the role of bystander. Congress leaders also had to protest to file a case, after which the cases were registered. But MLA Sanjay Gaikwad and MP Anil Bonde have not been arrested yet. Does the police not taking action against MLAs…by making inflammatory statements mean that there is a conspiracy by the ruling parties to create riots in the state?,” the statement issued by Congress said.

“Law and order in the state has completely broken down…There has been an increase in the violence against women in the state and the government is working to support the accused involved in the crimes…against minors and schoolgirls in Badlapur and Nagpur. Competitive exams have been stopped…The youth is getting depressed due to unemployment,” said the delegation adding that that the people of the state expect the Governor to direct the government to improve the situation.

The memorandum also said the state must give immediate relief to farmers as crops on an area of more than 6 lakh hectares had been damaged due to heavy rains.

The party informed that Governor C. P. Radhakrishnan assured the delegation that he will look into the entire matter. At the same time, the Governor also promised to take strict action after seeking information from the Home department regarding the controversial statement against Rahul Gandhi. Bonde, a Rajya Sabha member, and Gaikwad, who represents the Buldhana assembly constituency, kicked up a row with their remarks against Gandhi earlier this week.
