THE cVIGIL application that empowers citizens to flag any violation of rules by political parties in the run up to elections has so far received more than 7,400 complaints since the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into effect on October 15.

Of these 7360 complaints have been taken care off by the state election commission as per data provided by them on Friday evening. Of the 7400 complaints, 1014 complaints were received on Friday alone.

Since October 15 when MCC came into effect in the state till November 14, a total of 7,400 complaints have been received by SEC through the cVIGIL app coming up to nearly 250 complaints per day, as per their data. Of these, 6381 complaints have been taken care of by officials.

The official said that in the first week they received 773 complaints, and in the second week ending November 1, a total of 2062 complaints had been received on the app. In the past two weeks the number of complaints has doubled. “usually, as the polling day approaches, the numbers rise,” an official said.

An official said that most complaints are related to hoardings, advertisements of government policies which are not allowed after MCC comes into effect. In some cases, rival political parties too, use this to bring to light distribution of freebies among the electorate which is not allowed.

The app can be downloaded from the playstore and provides the option of uploading an audio file, video clip or photo of the illegality on the app along with a description.
Using GPS, the location is also sent to an SEC official, who is then expected to reach the spot within 100 minutes of the complaint and resolve the issue. The team is also expected to update the action taken which the citizen can see on the app.

“We also have an option for a person to complain anonymously but then one can’t view further updates on complaints given,” the official added. He said that as they are nearing the poll date, more complaints are pouring in.
