An 18-year-old student of D Y Patil College in Nerul allegedly committed suicide in her residence at Powai on Saturday night, depressed over her poor performance in the second semester of the physiotherapy course.

No suicide note was found. The police claimed that Bhajan Preet Bhuller had failed in three out of six subjects in her second semester and that might have prompted her to take the extreme step.

Senior Inspector Ashok Jadhav of Powai police station said,“On January 3,we received information about a suicide in Chetan Nagar area of Powai. When our officials reached the place,we found Bhuller’s body hanging from the ceiling of her study room on the first floor of her residence. On Saturday night,Bhuller and her sister Inderjit were chatting with a family friend on their computer. Around 11 pm,the duo went to their respective rooms. “On Sunday morning,Bhajan who used to sleep in her study room on the first floor did not open the door despite repeated knocks. The family then peeped through the window and found her body hanging from the ceiling,” said Jadhav.

The police learnt that Bhuller had failed in three out of six subjects. Jadhav added,“Her sister is doing well in her pilot training course at New Zealand and her elder brother is successfully pursuing engineering course. It seems her academic failure had made her disappointed.”

Jadhav said that Bhajan was very committed to her studies. “Her room had motivational messages on the walls. She had set high standards for herself. It was evident from the messages written on the walls. We will now interrogate the family friend with whom the sisters were chatting on Saturday night to get some clues,” he said.
