Payal Tadvi suicide case: Plea to add former gynaecology dept head as accused gets court nod

IN THE abetment to suicide case of post-graduate medical student Dr Payal Tadvi, a special court on Friday allowed a prosecution plea to add the then unit head of the gynaecology department as an accused.

Three post-graduate students, who were seniors of Tadvi, are facing charges, including that of abetment of suicide, for allegedly harassing her, leading her to take the extreme step in her hostel room on May 22, 2019.

Special public prosecutor Pradip Gharat made an application under Section 319 of the Criminal Procedure Code (power to proceed against other persons appearing to be guilty of offence), requesting that Dr Yi Ling, the then unit head at the gynaecology department of T N Topiwala National College and BYL Nair Hospital in 2019, be added as an accused.

The application said that in the complaint filed by Tadvi’s mother Abeda, she said that she had informed Dr Ling about the harassment being caused to her daughter by the three seniors but no action was taken and that it was omission on her part that she did not take any steps to stop the harassment.

The court allowed the plea to add Dr Ling as an accused in the case. The detailed order is yet to be made available.
