Paes files FIR alleging threat from cricketer Atul Sharma

Paes had filed a guardianship petition in the family court a few months ago seeking permanent custody of his daughter from former wife Rhea Pillai.

Davis Cupper Leander Paes Thursday lodged a complaint with the Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) police alleging that cricketer Atul Sharma had threatened to kill him and his eight-year-old daughter.

Paes had filed a guardianship petition in the family court a few months ago seeking permanent custody of his daughter from former wife Rhea Pillai.

Paes alleged, in his complaint to the BKC police, that he had submitted documents before the court which prove the reported relationship between Pillai and Sharma. “As soon as Paes exited the court room on Tuesday, he alleged that Sharma stopped him and began to threatening him,” said Kundalik Nigade, senior inspector, BKC police.

“Based on his allegations, a case was registered under Sections 506(2) (criminal intimidation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code against Sharma” Nigade said. He added that the police would now check CCTV cameras for a footage of the incident.

“Paes claimed that Sharma said: You will have to face dire consequences for your actions today. I will kill you. I will kill your daughter,” said Dhananjay Kulkarni, deputy commissioner of police (crime).

A source close to Paes said, “Two days ago, during a  court hearing, Sharma walked upto us and gave a death threat within the premises. We immediately consulted our lawyers, and went to the police”.

Mrunalini Deshmukh, Pillai’s lawyer, said, “I have not heard about the incident so it won’t be fair for me to comment.”
