Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) officers from the Bhiwandi Commissionerate in Mumbai arrested Mahendra Kumar Rawat, manager of finance and accounts of Oppo Mobiles India, on Wednesday for allegedly availing of input tax credit amounting to Rs 19 crore on fake invoices.

An investigation by the CGST’s anti-evasion wing revealed that Oppo Maharashtra availed of the credit without receiving any goods, an official said, adding that its supplier, Gain Hero India Private Limited, was found to be non-existent.

Sixteen invoices provided for the said transaction by the Chinese-origin company were found to be fake, according to the official. Invoices for over Rs 107 crore were purportedly issued by Gain Hero India Private Limited. Statements of the transporters and vehicle owners revealed there was no such supply of goods to Oppo Maharashtra, the official said.

The official said Rawat had admitted that some of the bills had been fake. He was arrested under section 69 of the CGST Act 2017 for the contravention of the Act’s section 132, the official added. He was sent to judicial custody till April 3.

The case is part of a special drive launched by the CGST’s Mumbai zone against tax fraudsters and tax evaders. The Bhiwandi Commissionerate has so far arrested 24 people in the past 18 months.
