Two persons, including a minor, were injured and one elderly woman lost her life after a huge branch of a tree fell upon them on Tuesday afternoon. This is the fourth death reported due to tree collapse in Mumbai this monsoon.

As per Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster cell, the deceased was identified as Shindabai Ahire (70), and the two injured persons are Rekhabai Sonawane (46) and Rudra Sonawane (3). Civic officials said that the Jamun tree, whose branch fell off, was located within the private compound of a residential building at Daftari Road in Malad (East).

Locals said Ahire was on her way to visit her family friend, accompanied by Rekhabai and her grandson Rudra, when the incident happened. When they were passing by the road adjoining the compound, a large branch of the tree collapsed, damaging the compound wall, and lay sprawled across the road affecting pedestrian movement.

Shindabai Ahire was rushed to BDBA Hospital (Kandivali), where she was declared dead, while Rekhabai and Rudra Sonawane were rushed to Jeevan Jyoti private hospital, where they are currently in a stable condition.

Meanwhile, Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Municipal Commissioner from P/North ward, which covers Malad area, said the local ward office didn’t receive any letter from the society requesting the pruning of the tree. Dighavkar also said that BMC too didn’t issue any notice to the society owners asking them to prune trees in their premises.

It is pertinent to note that ahead of the monsoon every year, BMC prunes all trees located in public spaces. However, trees located on private property are the responsibility of owners or society management people who should have the trees trimmed.

Earlier on June 28, Koushal Doshi (38) a Malad resident died after a tree collapsed on him. On the same day, Goregaon’s Premlal Nirmal (30) died after part of a coconut tree collapsed on him. On June 29, Rehman Khan (22) died after part of a banyan tree fell on him at Byculla.
