One held for stealing cheques from dropboxes, encashing money; search on for 2 aides

A 50-year-old man has been arrested by Mumbai crime branch for allegedly stealing cheques from drop boxes of ATM kiosks, erasing the names of recipients and writing his own name to encash the money from their accounts. Police said the two other individuals involved would remove cheques from the boxes using an L-shaped screwdriver, and then erase names of the recipients using a chemical.

As per police, the arrested person Shrinivas Rampal Kajania lives in the fort area with his family. Police said the incident came to light recently after cheques were stolen from the drop box of a private bank’s ATM in Byculla in the early hours of May 2. The accused had erased the names of the recipients and penned down their own names following which Rs 2.83 lakh was encashed into their bank accounts.

After the victims reported the matter to the bank, following which they lodged a complaint and a case of theft was registered at Nagpada police station.

“We were also working on leads obtained through the bank account details of the recipient. There were 17 accounts in Kajania’s name, but the addresses were fake, so we got his phone number through our sources and nabbed him near CST on Sunday,” said a crime branch officer.

When Kajania was brought to the police station and interrogated, he confessed to the crime and revealed the roles of two other accomplices.

“We are trying to trace the two absconders,” said an officer.

Police have further learnt that the group of accused categorically targeted the drop box of a specific private bank as it was easy for them to insert their L shaped screwdriver and remove the cheques from the boxes.

The officer said, “We have handed over the accused to Nagpada police station for investigation.”
