Tree-felling will not be allowed during the Byculla Zoo renovation,Municipal Commissioner Subodh Kumar said on Tuesday, even as he approved a significantly-altered revamp plan for the zoo. The civic chief, who visited the zoo on Tuesday along with senior civic officials, has asked the BMC to submit a fresh proposal, incorporating his suggestions, and submit it to the Central Zoo Authority.
The plan will be later sent to the Mumbai Heritage Conservation Committee. The cost of the new plan has been cut to Rs 150 crore from the original Rs 450 crore by the municipal commissioner, said Aseem Gupta,Additional Municipal Commissioner.
Under the new plan, the commissioner has suggested that exotic animals such as Humboldt Penguins and others such as bison, giraffe and zebra be included in the zoo.
The new proposal will not allow cutting of trees. The musuem and the botanical garden will be retained as they are. The interpretation centre next to the entrance will house Humboldt species penguins from Chile, said Gupta.
The new plan will also include restoration of hertigate structures at the main gate of the zoo.
We will soon start the renovation of nine heritage structures, including David Sassoon clock tower, triumphant arch, and the main gate, inside the zoo. The work will cost Rs 12 crore, said Gupta.
To avoid digging of soil and prevent the adjoining roots from twisting, glass enclosures have been suggested instead of moat enclosures, he said. Under the new plan, only mammals will be housed in the orignal zoo space and the additional space of seven acres from Mafatlal Mills next door will be used to housemembers of the cat family.
The BMC will also start work on the interpretation centre, expected to cost around Rs 20 crore, within three months, said senior officials.
The centre will have an e-ticketing facility, aquarium and an auditorium, with a capacity of 300,which will show wildlife documentaries. There is also a plan to have a e-books library.
“The reptile family will be shifted to a 30-acre plot near Powai lake. The Powai zoo, which will be an extension of the Byculla zoo will also house birds, said Gupta. The project will be done on a public-private partnership.
