Contractors carrying out pre-monsoon drain desilting work in the eastern suburbs will be fined up to Rs 1 lakh after Standing Committee chairman and Shiv Sena corporator Rahul Shewale inspected 10 nullahs on Tuesday and found several irregularities, especially that the mandatory signboard installed at the sites were in English,in some cases, and not in Marathi.
Other irregularities include labourers not wearing proper gloves and shoes while carrying out the desilting work, not transporting the silt to the dumping site within 48 hours etc. With just a week left before the May 31-deadline for completing all drain desilting activities, the work in the eastern suburbs is barely 50 per cent complete, said Shewale. Of the 1.20 lakh cubic metres of silt to be removed from nullahs across the eastern suburbs, about 60,000 cubic metres has been removed so far.
Shewale said though the work is progressing, there are many irregularities. The board stating the exact nature of the work, giving details such as project period etc. has to be put up where the work is going on. In six cases,I found that these boards are loosely put somewhere instead of being fixed. Moreover, the details are in English while it is compulsory for them to be in Marathi so that the common man can understand, he said.
The Standing Committee chairman said six contractors will be fined up to Rs 1 lakh. Such irregularities cant be overlooked. I have asked the stormwater drainage department to fine the contractors, said Shewale, who will soon inspect the island city and the western suburbs.
The BMC has repeatedly come under fire for the poor quality of desilting work. About 4,30,000 cubic metres of silt will be removed from major and minor drains across the city to prevent flooding during monsoons this year.
