Even as NMC withdraws discontinuation of CPS courses, admissions remain stalled
Over 1500 medical graduates who wish to pursue post graduate courses offered under CPS – who had registered for admissions; have written to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) which conducts admissions seeking clarity.

Even as the National Medical Council (NMC) has withdrawn notice of discontinuation of courses offered by College of Physicians and Surgeons (CPS), candidates complain that the admission process remains stalled post the stage of registration which was completed in July.
Over 1500 medical graduates who wish to pursue post graduate courses offered under CPS – who had registered for admissions; have written to the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) which conducts admissions seeking clarity. Aspirants have complained that each of them have paid Rs.3000 as registration fees but neither do they have clarity on admissions nor any information on refund of their fees.
One of the candidates, among those who have written to the DMER, said, “This is the admission process of the academic year 2023-24, which is already delayed due to various issues. We were hopeful as the registration process had started indicating that admissions for CPS courses have finally commenced. But since the registration process concluded on July 13 this year, there is no update thereafter.”
The CPS is the oldest Post Graduate Medical educational institution in India, established in 1912. An autonomous body empowered to confer qualifications by Indian Medical Degree Act 1916, CPS is based on the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Located in Mumbai’s Parel, it provides postgraduate medical education and offers fellowship and diploma courses. In August 2024, NMC issued a public notice to CPS to discontinue its courses for reasons such as regulatory violations, unrecognised qualifications among all. The notice was subsequently withdrawn by the NMC. But the process of admissions continues to remain stalled.
There are close to 450 seats under various courses offered by the CPS. “Following registration, a State Merit List (SML) is declared and then starts the process of choice filling wherein candidates provide their choices of courses in preference order. At the beginning of the process, the information brochure for admission to CPS courses stated that the choice-filling will be possible at the time of registration. But registration did not include the choice-filling. If there was no clarity on admissions, the registration should not have started. Now, all of us who registered for admissions are left in a limbo. If they are not going to conduct admissions, they should refund the registration-fee,” said one of the aspirants.
Confirming that the admissions are currently on hold, a senior officer from the DMER said, “We are waiting for directives regarding CPS admissions from Bombay High Court and the government.”Citizens urge BMC to leave Mehboob studio garden untouched in letter.
