Nationalist Congress Party (SP) will set up a team of counsels to extend legal aid for a judicial fight regarding the allegations on EVMs. Party president Sharad Pawar directed party candidates to collect documentary evidences regarding objections on irregularities in EVMs and wrongdoings in the electoral process.
Pawar on Tuesday held a meeting of all the MLAs and candidates from the NCP (SP) who contested the recently held assembly polls. “Candidates voiced their concerns not just about the electoral process but also EVM irregularities.
Our president has taken it seriously and directed to form a legal team which will assist candidates to address concerns with the election commission as well as in the courts,” said NCP (SP) spokesperson Mahesh Tapase.
According to sources, who attended the meeting, all candidates have been asked to immediately submit letters seeking verifications of the VVPAT. “The deadline to submit the letters seeking verifications of the VVPAT is November 28. A draft letter has been shared with everyone. They have been instructed to immediately begin the process,” said a candidate who attended the meeting.
NCP (SP) MLA Jitendra Awhad, who won the election from Mumbra-Kalva assembly seat by over 96,000 votes, supported the demand. “There has always been a leader who has led a nationwide movement in the country. Today it is important that a nationwide movement against EVM irregularities begins and I say that Sharad Pawar should lead it,” said Awhad.
Sources said that Pawar has not only voiced a positive opinion regarding the fight against EVM irregularities, but has also said that a similar move will be planned at a national level by the INDIA front. “He told us not to bow down and sit quiet, but instead asked us to start working on ground and collect as much evidence as possible against EVM irregularities,” said another leader who attended the meeting.
