NMMC sets up team to tackle financial challenges
A proposal to exempt properties under 500 square feet from taxes is under consideration, potentially impacting income further.

The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has set up a five-member task force to address its growing financial challenges. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Kailas Shinde has instructed the task force to propose strategies to recover arrears, identify new income sources and reduce operational costs. The team has been given 15 days to submit its report.
The task force comprises Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar, Chief Accounts and Finance Officer Satyawan Ubale, Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde, Deputy Commissioner Sharad Pawar, and Assistant Director of Town Planning Somnath Kekane. The team has been directed to focus on improving revenue collection, operational efficiency, cost-saving measures, and projecting future income.
The NMMC’s revenue comes primarily from property taxes, government grants, water supply fees, advertisement revenues, and charges for health services and town planning. However, no tax hikes have been implemented for over two decades.

To ensure the financial health of the corporation, Dr. Shinde has been conducting regular reviews with various departments to monitor and meet collection targets. This initiative is aimed at stabilizing municipal finances and improving resource allocation.
The task force’s recommendations are expected to play a significant role in shaping the NMMC’s financial strategy. The proposals could also create a model for sustainable urban governance. The municipal body’s ability to enhance revenue without burdening residents will be closely watched as it seeks to maintain essential services and infrastructure development.
