Aziz had joined the railways on compassionate ground following the death of his father,a junior engineer.

He is survived by two sons and wife.

His wife told Andheri police Aziz used to drink heavily and was also a smoker. She said a lit cigarette may have fallen on the bed, burning it slowly. As he was inebriated,he may not have noticed it.

Neighbours said they did not hear any noise from the Aziz house.

“We always used to hear noises of fights between husband-wife from that flat. However, that night we heard nothing,’’ said one.
