Even as party leaders continue to maintain that the seat-sharing talks of the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) are yet to begin, a consensus on total of 44 out of 48 Lok Sabha seats in Maharashtra is likely to be forming.
Sources within the MVA said that a primary discussion was held between the parties on a total of 44 seats. “Congress on 17, Shiv Sena (UBT) on 15 and Natio-nalist Congress Party (NCP) on 12. This is a very primary discussion and nothing has been finalised yet,” an opposition leader said.
Discussion on rest of the four seats will be held in the coming days. The meeting between the MVA leaders at NCP chief Sharad Pawar’s residence reportedly discussed seat-by-seat scenario for general elections in Maharashtra.
“The discussion was focused on which party has better chance of defeating the BJP in that particular constituency with the help of other two parties,” the leader said.
While the MVA leader confirmed that initial discussion on 44 seats was held, he said that talks will continue.
“Elective merit is the only criteria. There will be seats for the smaller allies as well and those will be given through the quota of bigger parties,” he said.
Maharashtra Congress on Tuesday held a meeting of its extended executive at state headquarters and prior to which a meeting of party’s parliamentary board was held.
Congress state chief Nana Patole said that all district heads have been called to Mumbai on June 2 and 3.
“We will be taking political feedback from them to know the ground reality. We have yet not finalised the number of seats the party will fight. We will contest those where we will have elective merit and chance to defeat the BJP,” said Patole, addressing a press conference after the meeting.
NCP’s Ajit Pawar on Tuesday said that discussion on seats other than 25 which were won by the MVA allies in 2019 will be held. The NCP, too, has asked its leaders to gather information on ground reality of seats where it stood second in 2019 general polls.
